Rainy days have been few and far between this summer, much to the frustration of farmers, green grass lovers, and those (like me) who appreciate quiet, cozy days. Today we’re all getting our dose of non-stop, drought-quenching rain and for the most part it feels great. But rainy days often keep you inside, and that can make for long days for the mamas.
We’ve had an early start to the day, with Finn waking unusually early at 5:30 am (please don’t let this become a thing). Knowing there was a great deal of rain in the forecast, we were about to head outside for a stroller walk around the neighbourhood. Just as soon as the idea took form, rain began to fall in heavy drops. So, we began a morning of taking in the soothing sound and dimmer light from our living room.
After breakfast, Finn and I read books, did some fishing and climbed all over Tess. We FaceTimed with grandparents, texted with daddy at work, and attempted a short-lived nap. Kind of typical stuff.
Soon, it became clear that if I was to survive until daddy came home, I needed to up my game and get outside, downpour or not. With Finn in the Ergo Baby carrier, and my big ol’ HBC umbrella above us, we set out down our street. We made it as far as the bridge overlooking the canal where I decided to continue on toward our neighbourhood beach.
As usual, just being outside soothed us both, and the cooling effect from the drops of rain that made it past our umbrella was a welcome change from the heat we’ve had recently. Once we arrived at the beach, the sideways blowing rain coming off the lake convinced me to call it quits on this adventure and head home.
Getting a bit of fresh air was enough to break up our day, and ease Finn into a nice little nap by the time we arrived home.
I think we may survive what remains of the rainy day at home. Just maybe.
How are you spending the rainy day, mamas? Any ideas to help us through the afternoon?
